Research and Technology Portal

This allows access to the Institute's networks of experts, cross-disciplinary R&D, project management, quality and systems engineering, as well as to technological news related to research in nuclear and particle physics.

IN2P3's 'Tech News' is the showcase for the technical expertise from the Institute's laboratories. The objective is to share our developments, achievements and scientific results obtained through detectors and instrumentation designed and produced by the technical groups of the Institute's laboratories.

Skills and professional expert networks: The Institute encourages the emergence of networks of experts around the main families of detectors and associated transverse techniques. These must meet the technological challenges of future experiments.

List of the Institute networks and associated expertise

  • Detection and instruments: semiconductors, gas detectors, photo-detection, cryogenic detectors, radiation detection, beams
  • Electronics and microelectronics: DAQ, microelectronics, PCB Design
  • Mechanics: mechanical calculation, 3D-metals, mechanical R&D
  • Transversal networks: computer science, instrumental biology
  • Project management and 'working together': project management, quality control, TEAMLAB, system engineering

Transversal R&D: The Institute supports technological R&D projects to overcome technical obstacles in the fields of detection, instrumentation, electronics, mechanics, computer science or any other multidisciplinary area. These projects are called 'transversal R&D' and are proposed by teams of engineers and researchers. They involve several of the Institute's laboratories. They are supported for a maximum of three years. The objectives are clearly defined and focus on instrumental issues affecting different scientific fields at IN2P3.

Project management and quality: The project teams are supported from within the Institute through the provision of project management tools, the organisation of national training activities (ANF) and support for the operation of several thematic networks.

  • The network of experts in project management: The EMAP network offers support and a space for sharing and capitalising on experiences. For example, the topics covered include: setting up a project, setting up and leading a team, project monitoring (reviews, meetings, action monitoring, etc.), project risk analysis, FMECA (Analysis of failure modes, their effects and criticality).

  • The quality network: Quality is an integral part of many activities in IN2P3. It is involved in instrumental developments (this is known as product quality assurance), in laboratories for their organisation or skills such as metrology where specific accreditation is required. IN2P3 quality network was created twenty years ago. This allows experiences to be shared, responds to the requirements of laboratories and those created by their projects and makes a pool of competent personnel available to carry out internal audits who are also more generally ready to help and assist any colleague who asks.

  • The systems engineering network: The success of a project depends on three pillars: management, product assurance and systems engineering. This explains why IN2P3 is setting up a 'systems engineering' network in addition to the EMAP and quality networks. These actions are carried out in collaboration with the INSU and in connection with CNRS QeR (Quality in Research) network.
